Benefiting Shelter's Story

The 2017 Molly-Dharma Run Benefiting Shelter is
Planet Pet, Wheat Ridge, CO

Planet Pet, originally established in Denver and now located in Wheat Ridge, was created by Dr. Jeff Young of Planned Pethood Plus (PPP) in 2005. Planet Pet was established to save the many abandoned and relinquished animals that he found at his low-cost clinic’s doorstep.

Planet Pet became a refuge for these animals, giving them a loving environment before adopting them out to their new forever homes.  Our rescue program is run by our passionate and dedicated staff, volunteers and foster families that work diligently giving these animals reassurance to overcome past issues of abuse, neglect or abandonment.

We have a small, one-on-one environment, which allows the Planet Pet staff to give our furry friends extra love, as well as to get to know these wonderful animals prior to placing them in the right, forever home.

Since opening, Planet Pet has found homes for thousands of cats and dogs.  We have also been known to place a few rats, bunnies, guinea pigs and exotic pets too!  Because we are a smaller rescue and affiliated with a low-cost clinic, we can remain in the pet’s life, providing guidance and assistance, if needed to new families.

WHAT WE DO FOR ANIMALS WHILE THEY ARE IN OUR CARE:

Vet Service:  Working together with the Planned Pethood Plus Team, all of our adoptable pets have thorough medical checks which include microchips, spays, neuters, dental exams and cleanings, plus other needed surgeries to ensure that the animal will have a healthy start to their new life.

Yearly, we see 100’s of dogs that have parvo, a third of which will be relinquished due to the cost and time of the treatment. In turn, PPP treats these puppies, and Planet Pet hosts them in their convalescence, bringing them back to their optimal weight and puppy-bounce!

How Our Adoptable Pets Find Us:  Planet Pet, not only takes in relinquished pets from PPP, we also take in unclaimed neighborhood strays, feral kittens brought in from area farms, and cats and dogs from area rescues to name a few. We are dedicated to re-homing these animals and will work to find their forever home for as long as it takes.

Pet Supplies:  Planet Pet also carries affordable pet supplies.  We provide high-quality, nutritional food at a lower cost to keep pets healthy for a longer life.  Collars, leashes, coats, toys and snacks can also be found here!  Our store proceeds go back to the care and promotion of our adoptable pets.

Adoption Fees / Foster Families:  Adoption fees are returned to PPI to continue caring for future adoptable animals. We actively seek and expand our foster network so more animals can be helped.

Planned Pethood International (PPI )Fund:  Established as a 501c3 in 2003, PPI was created to help lower income individuals afford medical care for the companion animals, address animal mistreatment and overpopulation.  PPI has financed low cost and free spay / neuter clinics and has trained veterinarians from all around the world in safe, efficient and fast surgical techniques.  The combined effort between PPP and PPI has resulted in over 250,000 spay/neuters and the training of over 300 veterinarians and veterinary students.

Planet Pet is honored to be chosen as the recipient of the 11th Annual Molly-Dharma Run proceeds. The donation will ensure the safe and healthy future of many deserving pets, and our continued ability to help these animals in need.
